The Fast-Food Giant Removes Artificial Intelligence Christmas Ad In the Wake of Online Criticism.

McDonald's has taken down a Christmas advert created with Artificial Intelligence following facing significant public disapproval.

The short ad was created via generative AI clips and was first uploaded online for McDonald's Netherlands back on 6 December.

Social Media Response and Removal

Shortly after its release, audiences online denounced the employment of AI in the film. Several labeled it "creepy" and "jarringly assembled".

"This incident represents an key learning as we examine the effective use of AI," stated a representative from the company.

The advert was created for the brand by Dutch agency TBWA\Neboko and American production company The Sweetshop. It showed various situations that can go wrong during the holidays, under the tagline "not the most wonderful time of the year".

A Growing Trend of AI in Advertising

Campaigns that include AI-created content have emerged as a growing trend among prominent companies, notably for the holiday season.

  • Coca-Cola has also launched consecutive AI-generated Christmas ads.
  • Inherent Limitations: As segments made using generative AI are prone to degrade the more extended they are, most such clips tend to be only six to 10 seconds in length.
  • Broader Implications: The ad also provoked concerns about the replacement of human roles in the advertising industry, with some critics noting it could reduce work for camera crews.

Response from the Creators

After the ad being taken down, a producer's head, Melanie Bridge, defended the advert.

She stated, the development required "over a month and a half" and involved producing "countless iterations" which were then edited afterward "just as we would on any high-craft production".

"This wasn't just an experiment," she said. "It was a finished piece."

Divisive Audience Sentiment

While the Dutch McDonald's commercial was mostly criticized, the sentiment for some AI-assisted campaigns has been divisive.

For instance, a recent AI-created Christmas ad from Coca-Cola reportedly received a significant "favorable response" from online commenters.

However, various brands have also faced scrutiny for employing AI in advertising. Luxury fashion house Valentino, for example, was criticized for advertisements that critics called "lazy" and "disturbing".

The situation highlights the ongoing debate within the advertising and creative sectors about the trade-off between AI efficiency and human craftsmanship.
