The fast bowler Poised for a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry

Pat Cummins bowling

Pat Cummins has secured 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.

The Australian selection chief George Bailey has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming England-Australia contest.

There were concerns that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.

Earlier indications from the squad suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on 21 November in Perth.

The selector shared that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about the prospects of being involved.

"It's clear that time is getting short and multiple considerations around that, not just the back issue, but other factors as well," he commented.

"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he's going to play a key capacity. With luck from the opening match. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Previous Setbacks

Cummins was ruled out the ODI and T20 games against New Zealand and India last month after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.

He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the Ashes.

Bailey noted that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from the national team for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.

Bailey described it as a "small issue and stated that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the initial game as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches anyway. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
